Some Men Who May Have Been Moved from the Camp Chase Cemetery

#1 S. C. Logan Company D 8th Kentucky Cavalry between graves 7 & 8. According to CMSR’s died on August 22, 1863.

#2 R. M. Lee Company C 6th Kentucky Cavalry between 12 & 13 Robert M. Lee died August 25, 1863 a Morgan Raider. He has two Find A Grave Memorials #144343332 being more accurate. Find A Grave Memorial # 10056881 notes he may have been buried in the Columbus City Cemetery and that would be incorrect for a date of August 25, 1863. He was originally buried between graves 12 & 13.

#3 J. S. Hendricks Company I 13th Tennessee between 15 and 16 and ½.

#4 William Leonidas Pope Company A 9th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry between graves 58 and 59 Shot by guard, died November 5, 1863. How he was shot. “Affidavit of Corporal Miller Wilson, Company A 15t Regiment Invalid Corps, in regard to the shooting of William L. Pope, 9th Tennessee Cavalry at Camp Chase, November 5, 1863. My instructions were first to allow no man to come within four feet of the fence. Second, to halt all men twice. Third, when they refused to obey the challenge to fire upon them. Fourth, I received my instructions from Captain Smith, Company C 15th Regiment Invalid Corps, officer of the day at that time. I also received the same orders from the officer of the guard, whose name I disremember. I was on the parapet of Prison Number 1 and the prisoner, Pope, came out of the door of the barracks between 11 and 12 o’clock at night. He came toward the fence and came to within a few feet of the fence, when I ordered him to halt three or four times, but he did not stop and I fired on him. The ball went through his right arm and hip and completely through his body. He died about 4 o’clock next morning. Signed Miller Wilson Corporal Company A 15th Regiment Invalid Corps.” He has a Find A Grave Memorial # 103166224 and is buried in Williamson County, Tennessee.

#5 H. A. Adkins Company E 16th Virginia Cavalry between 62 and 63 full name Hezekiah A. Adkins III born about 1834. Died November 11, 1863.

#6 W. T. Newby Company 7th Kentucky Cavalry between 100 and 101 CMSR’s reported died at Camp Chase January 28, 1864 full name William T. Newby under remarks stated removed to Kentucky. Find A Grave Memorial # 94092458 buried in Madison County, Kentucky.

#7 Captain W. N. Scales Company D 5th Mississippi Cavalry between 132 and 133 buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee Find A Grave Memorial # 8493099 full name William Nathaniel Scales.

#8 Owen Edwards Company B 1st Kentucky Cavalry between 159 & 161 according to CMSR’s originally buried in 160 and died on May 20, 1864. Find A Grave Memorial # 6415956 stated removed to Boone County, Kentucky however memorial was done by Rickards Yuck!

#9 SENT HOME 2nd Lieutenant Samuel Z. Herndon Company C 1st Kentucky Cavalry between 178 & 181 no grave number.

#10 Philip Hackett Company B 57th Virginia between 208 & 210 According to his CMSR’s originally buried in 209 at the Camp Chase Cemetery and died on August 17, 1864 and noted as born in Berlin, Germany and was about 26 years old when he died.

#11 R. A. Blackwood Company C 20th Virginia Cavalry between 244 & 246 full name Richard A. Blackwood originally buried in grave 245 according to his CMSR’s and died on September 15, 1864. Find A Grave Memorial # 6289473 stated his name was Robert A. Blackwood. His CMSR’s disagree with his given name as well as the 1860 census. CMSR’s stated he died of diarrhea and not being shot as told on Find A Grave.
#12 W. H. Allen Company B 5th Alabama Cavalry between 391 & 393 full name William H. Allen according to CMSR’s he was buried in grave 392 at the Chase Cemetery and died on November 3, 1864. Find A Grave Memorial # 6282571 done by Rickard’s Yuck!

#13 Captain E. J. Jarvis Company A 46th Battalion Virginia Cavalry between 467 & 469 according to his CMSR’s his full name was Edmund J. Jarvis and died on November 15, 1864 and originally buried in grave number 468 and died of a gun-shot wound. Find A Grave Memorial # 73856289 stated he is buried at the Toll Gate Baptist Cemetery in Ritchie County, West Virginia.

#15 J. W. Luster Company A 33rd Tennessee

#16 J. P. Lindley Company F 1st Confederate

#17 Thomas J. Stephens Company A 25th Louisiana

#18 Hiram Blund Company I 1st Georgia Should have been Hiram Bland.

#19 F. B. Smith Company H Dobbin’s Arkansas Cavalry buried between graves 538 & 540 according to CMSR’s his name was Frank B. Smith and buried in grave 539 at the Chase Cemetery and died on December 1, 1864.

#20 Jno Sanford Ward’s Battery Alabama Light Artillery between graves 579 & 581 according to CMSR’s name was John Sanford and buried in grave 580 at the Chase Cemetery and died on December 8, 1864. Find A Grave Memorial # 63270371.

#21 Edward G. Saussy Company C 1st Olmstead’s Georgia Infantry buried between graves 581 & 583 and full name Edward Gugle Saussy Find A Grave Memorial # 24216652 has a fairly compelling story of his body being removed from Camp Chase on October 15, 1870 and removed to Chatham County, Georgia. According to CMSR’s he died on December 9, 1864 and originally buried in grave 582.

#22 W. H. Tunison Stewart’s Escort Alabama

#23 T. S. Norton Company C 1st Georgia (Olmstead’s) between graves 1119 & 1121. According to CMSR’s full name Thaddeus S. Norton died February 8, 1865 and buried in grave 1120

#24 W. G. Herrington Company E 4th Kentucky Cavalry between graves 1177 & 1179 at the Camp Chase Cemetery and according to CMSR’s his full name was William G. Herrington and died on February 11, 1865. Federal POW Records stated he told Federal authorities his residence was Meade County, Kentucky.

#25 Valentine Hardin Company A 6th Kentucky Mounted Infantry between graves 1231 & 1233. According to CMSR’s died February 14, 1865 no grave listed.

#26 T. R. Driesbach Company F 7th Alabama Cavalry buried between graves 1234 & 1236. Full name Tate Randolph Driesbach and buried in Circleville, Ohio. According to CMSR’s died at Camp Chase on February 14, 1865. Find A Grave Memorial # 91817313 stated he was removed to the Forest Cemetery in Circleville, Ohio located in Pickaway County. He was the only Confederate to die at Camp Chase and mentioned in a letter written by former General Robert E. Lee.

#27 Richard Doherty Company D 4th Louisiana buried between graves 1368 & 1370. According to CMSR’s he died February 21, 1865 due to small-pox and buried in grave 1369 at the Chase Cemetery.
#28 Walter B. Janney Company D 6th Virginia Cavalry between 1559 & 1561 full name on CMSR’s William Walter B. Janney and buried in grave 1560 and died on March 5, 1865. Find A Grave Memorial # 141532900 has a photograph of his tombstone in Jefferson County, West Virginia.

#29 F. A. Skinner Company A 13th Kentucky Cavalry between 1644 & 1646 full name Francis A. Skinner. CMSR’s stated he was buried in grave 1645 and died on March 13, 1865.

#30 Robert R. Riddell Company A 10th Kentucky Cavalry (Diamond’s) between 1896 & 1898 CMSR’s stated he was buried in grave 1897 and died on April 19, 1865.

#31 C. F. Wilfong Company E 3rd North Carolina full name Charles Summey Wilfong between 2001 & 2003 CMSR’s stated he was buried in grave 2002 at the Chase Cemetery on May 26, 1865. Find A Grave Memorial # 31014388 indicates he is buried in Catawba County, North Carolina however it appears to be Memory tombstone.

#32 E. L. Moses Company D 27th South Carolina full name Edwin L. Moses CMSR’s stated he died on June 16, 1865

#33 1st Lieutenant Robert McMurray Company F 53rd Tennessee according to CMSR’s died May 23, 1862 should have originally been buried in Columbus City Cemetery.

#34 J. W. Cummins Company I 1st Tennessee according to CMSR’s died June 4, 1862 originally buried in Columbus City Cemetery.

#35 Charles H. Sandefur Company B 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry between 2111 & 2112 at the Chase Cemetery. CMSR’s stated he died on May 3, 1863 and originally buried at the East Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.

#36 John H. Kennedy a Union soldier now buried at the Green Lawn Cemetery. The Adjutant General of Ohio annual reports dated 1866-1868 listed John Kennedy died on February 8, 1863 (The compiler notes this may have been his date of burial) and buried in grave number 72 at the East Cemetery, located in Columbus, Ohio and referred to his unit as the 23rd Kentucky Volunteers. (The compiler feels this was in error and should have been the 33rd Kentucky Volunteers) On page eighty-six of the Adjutant General of Ohio annual reports dated 1866-1868 it was mentioned that John Kennedy was reinterred in January 1864 from the East Cemetery and had been with the 33rd Kentucky Volunteers and taken to grave 87 at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio which is also referred to as soldiers circle.
